Lake's up!

What will the level be on the 4th of July? How will it affect the activities on the holiday? Watch for details on the Shippin' Post's billboard. It will be updated July 2-4. The parade goes on, even in the rain. A direct line to the weatherman keeps tab on approaching lightning and cat-n-dog storms.

T-shirts are available at the Shippin' Post. Buy one early - wear it at the parade!

It's exciting! Wait until you see who has entered a float in this year's parade. Expect your jaw to drop! The theme is Sing a Song of Freedom as suggested by Judy Geddes. Add a boom box and play patriotic tunes. Yes, Chief Judge Warwick Andrews assures us that awards will be given for patriotic themed floats, emphasizing the typical categories: patriotic, humorous and most red, white and blue. The 2007 Best Float will be awarded the Ann Murrow roving cup trophy. The trophy was won by Wanda Johnson for three years, with St. Peter's Episcopal Church claiming the trophy last year. Keep the theme in mind while developing your float.

Hot and dry, that describes a typical 4th of July. Keep hydrated! Water and soda will be sold along the parade route by the Lago Vista Lions' Club.

The 4th of July event is of, for, and by the residents of our community. It is also funded by the community. Please, send in your contribution (POB 4926, Lago Vista) or drop it off at Coldwell Banker, S. G. Billings, across from Dr. Kyte's office. Your dollars provide for the fireworks show, security (six officers), decorations, as well as prizes and very expensive insurance. Reach deep and participate in your holiday, its fun and, yes, its cost money. What part of the $26,000 budget are you claiming to cover?

American Idyl - Lago Vista Style! Wow! It's exciting to see and hear the contestants! Last pre-trial is slated for Bams Roadhouse Grill. See their ad for this weekend's time and date. See you there!

Two weeks 'till the 4th of July! Registrations are coming in - and such interesting interpretations of "Sing a Song of Freedom!" The community will be proud of this year's entries exemplifying the freedoms we Americans enjoy and protect. Judges will be giving awards to those who "Sing a Song of Freedom" so be sure to add patriotic music to your float!

The weekend prior to the 4th of July all groups and families who have entered the parade will receive an email with information showing where they are to park their float and at what point their float will be in the float. Bring this information along with you to the parade. Numbered placards will be given to each float in the parking lot. The judges need to these numbers to know who you are!

Are you registered yet? What are you waiting for? Submit your parade, sports, tennis, Family Activity & Games and Little Miss/Mr Lago Vista registrations. It's LagoVistaJuly4.org.

Parking for floats is, as always, at St. Mary's, Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church. Arrive at 9:15 a.m. You will be met at the two entry places on Lohman Ford Road: Civic Drive and the driveway next to the statue at the church. Deer Run at Dawn will be closed off. No dropping off float riders will be permitted in the parking lot. Use Travis Drive, the street next to SLR Grocery to drive to the church and drop off riders or to park personal, non-float cars.

Fireworks always depend upon money brought in by the community. Cut-off date is approaching and much more money is definitely needed. Drop off at 4th of July Headquarters at Colwell Banker, S. G. Billings, Realtors, 6505 Lohman Ford Road.

Miss Judy is calling all children eight years and under to participate in the Little Miss/Mr Lago Vista Contest. The winners will be selected by the roar and excitement of the crowd surrounding the pool-side band stand at 4:30 p.m. on the 4th. Register on-line or call Judy Geddes at 267-2864. Select your style: dance, sing or perhaps play a fiddle, it's up to you. Dress accordingly and do bring along your DVD or CD. Register now or just show up! Winners have shown talent or merely had a gleam in their eye, flying the red, white and blue or have been babes in arms.

Two down and two to go! The Deli Works is the place and 9:00 p.m. Saturday is the time for this week's American Style - Lago Vista Style show. Talent is popping out on the North Shore! Stop in early and sign-up or just show up for the contest, set to Karaoke music. The last pre-4th contest is set for the following weekend at BAMS. The winner and runner-up from each of the four venues will compete on the 4th of July at 4:00 p.m., with the finals at 5:30 p.m. A three-hour recording session at a recording studio and a tour during July will be awarded to the winner.

Wondering when an event is scheduled for the 4th? Check out the website, it is a wealth of information, everything from contact names, schedules, registration forms, pictures and maps. Check it out!

Sing a Song of Freedom! is the 2007 theme for the 4th of July. Add a boom box on your parade float, a DVD in your vehicle or motorcycle and one at the 5K race registration table! Fill the hills with patriotic music!

Judges will add scoring points to floats that play patriotic music as well as portray the theme in their decorations. Chief judge is Warwick Andrews, serving with Mayor Randy Kruger, David Freeman, Stan Miller, Denny Grosse, and Kim Hibbert. Watch them float down the avenue and run up to their judge's chair!

Is your float or vehicle registered for the parade? LagoVistaJuly4.org is the place to register and to see the slate of bands and activities set for your holiday entertainment, winners of the American Idyl - Lago Vista Style at the Lone Star Bar, sport tournaments, Family Activities and Games plus all the goodies being served at the many food booths.

Register to enter the parade, Coyote Trail 5K & 1 mile Wiley Coyote Run, sport tournaments, tennis, Family Activities & Games, Hills & Spokes Bicycle Rally and for the Little Miss/Mr contest for children eight years and younger.

The early bird catches the worm, in this case a T-shirt. All 5K runners must have submitted their registration form and fee prior to June 28th in order to be guaranteed a free T-shirt.

Expect many patriotic surprises in the parade. Many new organizations and several new concepts are planning their floats. Toilet plungers? Empty plastic bags? Can you top these?

Music is a top priority. Jim Swayze has garnered many area favorites and has included new flavors. The Godcore Ministries from Dallas, gospel musicians will have as many as five bands on the soccer field stage during the afternoon. Sarah Hughes and her band is expected, coming all the way from Arkansas (yes!).

Headlining the evening is the much loved George Gusman Jr. Band. Other well known bands gracing the two stages are 8 Ball Down, Dim Lit Daylight, Jul & Chrome Wheels and Dewayne Davis bands. Good job Swayze!

Special events this year include the time honored children's activity, the Little Miss/Mr Lago Vista contest, with the new American Idyl - Lago Vista preliminary run-off and, later, the final selection. The winner will receive a three hour recording session and be on tour during the month of July. A Zippy Dance Contest is underway also.

The 2007 Miss Lago Vista is a contest all young ladies are invited to participate in. Drop off your picture, along with a paragraph or two on what you participate in around Lago Vista, your name and telephone number at 4th of July Headquarters, Coldwell Bankers, S.G. Billings, Realtors or email to AnnMurrow@aol.com

Time-honored rules of the Council have changed a bit: no duplicate food booths are permitted, unless the original provider permits it in writing. This change was made in order to give more opportunity to have a variety of food items available for the crowd during the evening.

Questions? Call 970-4400.

Greg Ochoa has the winning logo for the official 4th of July T-shirt in the production stage. It will appear mid June at the Shippin' Post in a size for you. Muscle type T-shirts for children are available this year also. Wear them around town and, of course, on the 4th of July. As the sales progress, a second run will be made at the end of the month for the 5K runner who have registered and pre-paid their registration by the 28th of June.

Businesses around town are submitting their logos and $150 check to hold a space on the coveted back of the official 4th of July T-shirt. Is your space reserved? Call Ochoa at 267-9505. His winning smile will captivate you as you pull out your checkbook. A few slots are available for individuals as well. Call now, please. Denny Grosse, Jerry Chapman and Fred Kongabel are looking for families who bike together. They invite you and yours to participate in the Hills and Spokes Family Bicycle Rally. This rally meanders around the same route serving the Coyote Trail 5K Race and the Wiley Coyote 1 Mile Fun Run. Registration is at 7:30 a.m., with the run beginning at 8:00 a.m. Register soon, please, on the website.

Jim Swayze is finalizing his list of bands and other entertainment for the two stages at the Bar K Park, one near the booths and the other along the sideline of the soccer field.

Coyote Trail 5K Race and the Wiley Coyote 1 Mile Fun Run leaders have set a goal this year of 100 registered runners. Have you registered? Tell friends and invite them along!

Name that Theme and Hero

Happy Birthday, America!, was last year's theme for the 4th of July day-long event. The Lago Vista 4th of July Council is asking for ideas from you and your neighbors for this year's patriotic holiday theme. Suggestions need to be suitable for use in float and booth decorations and on the official website LagoVistaJuly4.org, Awards this year will be given to float and booth entrants who depict the soon-to-be announced 2007 theme. Submit your ideas today! Deadline is May 24th.

This year you have seen remarkable things accomplished by humble, unsung friends and neighbors. It is time to highlight them. The Council is interested in having several applicants for the 2007 honor. The rules are simple: no money paid for doing this deed(s), no publicity given (thus unsung), and not a member of the Council. In the past we had foster parents (106 infants), a pair who instigated the local EMS, as well as residents who were involved in just everything, everywhere. Lago Vistans are talented and the community is blessed! May 15th is the deadline.
Tennis has become an integral part of the North Shore's patriotic celebration. Carter Tannehill has built this activity into one of the mainstays of the 4th of July and he invites you to participate in this year's tennis tournament. Carter is ranked in the top 25 of championship level players in his age group (60-64) in the state of Texas and plays USTA level 4.0 in the Adult tournaments and leagues. He will represent the State of Texas in the National Senior Games in Louisville Kentucky this June as the Gold Medal winner in 60-64 singles and the Silver winner in 55-59 mixed doubles. Register on line!
Music for everyone is the goal of this year's music selection, thanks to the efforts and knowledge of Jim Schwazye, who is planning the program for the two stages at the Bar K Park. Gospel rock, Southern Country, Rock, Southern Rock, Blues, Country, Folk and Indie Folk are the sounds scheduled for your holiday pleasure.

Tammy Hovik is the tiger leading the Coyote Trail 5K & 1 mile Wiley Coyote Run. She and her group are planning for some 100 racers! She is a kindergarten teacher in Leander and after school Mom who enjoys watching her sons play baseball. An avid runner, she has run 15 marathons including the Austin, Boston, New York and San Antonio Marathons. If you see a group of runners on the trails in Lago Vista, chances are that she is one of them. The Council is delighted to have her at the helm of the 5k races. She is a take-charge gal!

Come join us this Thursday, May 3rd at 6:30 pm at the K Oaks Clubhouse. Questions? Check out the updated website, LagoVistaJuly4.org or call 970-4400.

March 25, 2007

There's a tiger at the helm of the Coyote Trail 5K & 1 mile Wiley Coyote Run 5 K race: Tammy Hovik, a member of the Lago Vista Runners Association. Much will remain the same, but look at these changes: a discount and official July 4th T-shirt to those who register on the web before race day, a one-mile race to be added, awards for winners, and, lo and behold, blue and pink porta-potties complete with hand sanitizers! Same race route, and accompanied by the bicyclists in the Hills and Spokes Bicycle Rally, thanks to Jerry Chapman's team of Rotarians.

There's a new deal on the 4th: the Ms. Lago Vista contest for youngsters to 110. Head honcho is creator and fearless leader, Missy Waggoner and co-chair Georgia Wilder. Ladies who are daring, courageous and appreciate humor will surely enter this unusual contest!

"I remember that game," is what you'll say when you review this list of probable family games Patti Ulrich and Bev Machart are planning: pass-the-peanut, pass-the-orange, three-legged race, giant pickup sticks, croquet. bocce lawn toss, birili lawn bowling, Oreo-cookie-eating, egg toss, watermelon seed toss, washer toss, horseshoe tournament, bean bag toss, pin the donkey, Jacks, face painting, tug of war, hula hoops, apple-bobbing and a few they haven't even thought of yet! It's a long list of volunteers, (room for more) who have already signed up to participate in this family-orientated fun afternoon.

And don't forget the Cow Chip Capitol of the World Contest. Head chip counter is Mike Mc Kiernan who has ordered more chips for this year's contest. This event is open to all ages, with a special category for city, school and LVPOA elected officials and their partner. First one to sign up will have that category of the contest named after him/her.

Cheryl Sullivan, sports coordinator, reminds churches, businesses and organizations that when they formulate their various sport teams, to apply an appropriate name to the team, i.e. the Lion's Roaring Team, Realtors with the Classiest Lines, Scouts Earning Badges or, the Running Team. Does your organization have teams in place for soccer, soft ball, washers, badminton, horseshoe and lacrosse? Please call Cheryl at 267-3233 to add your organization's sport coordinator's name to her growing list.

Bev Machart, the Lago Vista 4th of July Council's webmaster, has the 2007 LagoVistaJuly4.org site ready for easy reference. It contains scheduling and event information along with registration forms for the Patriotic Parade, Hills and Spokes Family Bicycle Rally, tennis tournament, sports, and Little Miss/Mr. Lago Vista contest. Jim Swayze is the whiz with the registration forms on the web. Check to see if the 5K registration form is online.

The Star Spangled Banner Golf Tournament, the Council's fundraiser, has become a major event for both golfers and Council members. Stan Miller (267-0445) is the pro, just call him to place your team on the roster.

Join the fun, the Council meets next Thursday, May 3rd at 6:30 pm at the K Oaks Clubhouse. Questions: 970-4400.
